Summer 2014 work experience.
After my first year back in education it was a welcome rest bite to actually get out and about and use some of my new found knowledge and skills in the work place.
I was taken on by Fraser at Went to Mow to help his newly built business through its first full summer of trading. This is a Nottingham based garden maintenance company that deals with gardens for the general public and also commercial contracts for businesses. I was helping with general garden maintenance and clearances but also advising on planting and care of plants and bedding and also with lawn care and maintenance.
This experience might not be directly related to the career direction that I want to go in, but I learnt important lessons in time management, managing customer expectation and also some plant pathology and soil science skills.
I spent 4 months over summer with Went to Mow and during this time I got to use quite a variety of tools and machinery for various tasks and dealt with lots of different people and horticultural situations. This experience has proved invaluable to me, moving into my second year of study, as it has increased my understanding of what is actually required and expected within the industry.
I am now helping with bidding for new contracts and expanding the business using my second year modules in green space management and horticultural practices to help with costings and informing customers of what is required within the job to meet there requirements they want from the garden or green space.
We have also now taken on an apprentice and I am helping him with training and plant knowledge so passing on my skills and knowledge to help others that want to get on in the industry.
