As part of a school project about food, I have been helping my daughter sow some cress seeds so she can learn about germination and where food comes from. We chose cress as the results are almost immediate and it is difficult to keep a seven year old's attention span for longer than 24 hours, so quick results are needed
So the basic equipment consisted of a receptacle for the cress to grow in, some form of media for in, some water and the seeds.
So she wets the growing media, in this case some cotton wool pads.
Not too much though.
Put the wet media in the bottom of the receptacle.
Make sure the media covers all of the bottom.
And then sprinkle on the seeds.
And then place on a sunny window sill and keep the media moist and check back everyday to see how they are progressing.
Within 24 hours the seed coats are splitting and the radicle is emerging.
After 48 hours and the seedlings hypocotyls are shooting and foliage forming.
72 hours and the plants are nearly fully formed.
96 hours and it is ready to eat.
